Odisha Vigilance catches SI after dramatic pond chase over Rs 10,000 bribe

Bhubaneswar, Nov 5 (UNI) A police Sub-Inspector in Odisha's Sambalpur district jumped into a pond to evade arrest after allegedly accepting a Rs 10,000 bribe, but was chased into the water and caught by an Odisha Vigilance sleuth.
The accused, Sujit Kumar Mahanta, posted at Mahulpali police station, was caught red-handed while allegedly accepting the bribe from a complainant in exchange for finalising a miscellaneous case registered against him at the police station.
Mahanta had summoned the complainant to an isolated spot outside the police station on Wednesday to collect the money. As soon as he noticed the Vigilance team closing in, he fled the spot. During the ensuing chase, he jumped into a nearby pond in a bid to escape. However, a Vigilance team member swam into the pond and nabbed him.
The entire bribe amount was recovered from his possession and seized in the presence of witnesses. His right-hand wash also tested positive for the chemical reaction, confirming his handling of the tainted money.
Following the trap, simultaneous searches were conducted at his rest room adjoining the police station, his office chamber and his father's government quarter at Bandamunda in Rourkela. Cash amounting to Rs 1,55,700 was recovered from his rest room.
Mahanta has been detained for further interrogation. He joined the police service as a directly recruited Sub-Inspector in 2021.
