Former Odisha MP Bhaskar Rao under EOW scanner in Rs 80 crore fraud case

Bhubaneswar, Nov 6 (UNI) The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Odisha Crime Branch on Friday raided former Rajya Sabha MP N Bhaskar Rao’s residence in Rayagada in connection with an alleged Rs 80-crore embezzlement of funds belonging to the local Truck Owners’ Association.
A 21-member special EOW team, led by Additional Superintendent of Police Ashish Kumar Mishra, conducted an extensive search at Rao’s residence in Raniguda. The officials examined financial records and searched for documents linked to the alleged misappropriation.
The case originated from a complaint lodged by late Y Venkateshwar Rao, former president of the Truck Owners’ Association, accusing Bhaskar Rao and several others of allegedly siphoning off around Rs 80 crore belonging to the organisation.
Rayagada police recently transferred the case to the EOW for investigation, considering the scale of the alleged financial irregularities.
An advance team of EOW officials had been camping in Rayagada for the past two days to collect preliminary documents and records from the local police station before launching Friday’s search operation.
Bhaskar Rao was reportedly away from Rayagada and was not present at his residence during the raid. The investigating team also questioned his aides and staff as part of the probe.
The EOW is yet to issue an official statement on the outcome of the search or confirm the seizure of any documents.
