Tripura police team in Delhi for transit remand for arrested content creator Amir Shokeen

Agartala, Oct 22 (UNI) Following the arrest of Amir Shokeen, a social media content creator, over alleged racial slurs hurled at a young tribal man from Tripura, a police team from Tripura, with DSP Headquarters Samudra Debbarma at the helm, has traveled to Delhi this evening to secure Amir's transit remand to Agartala.
Earlier, Delhi Police arrested Amir Shokeen after facing intense backlash from Northeast India for his disrespectful behavior towards a young tribal man from Tripura.
This incident, which involved abusive language, racial slurs, and inappropriate physical interactions, took place just two days before his arrest.
Following directives from Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, the Tripura DGP collaborated with his Delhi counterpart, leading to a raid at Amir's residence in North Delhi.
Amir has been charged under the Sadar Bazar Police Station in New Delhi and is set to appear in a local court, where Tripura police will seek his transit remand for further investigation.
Amir's transit remand to Agartala has been sought in connection with a complaint filed at the New Capital Complex police station.
The turn of events follows widespread protests and demands for swift action from numerous political parties, indigenous organizations, student groups, and civil society throughout the Northeast.
The controversy ignited after a video emerged on social media, allegedly depicting Amir making racially charged comments toward the tribal youth, describing him as “Chinese” and using derogatory expressions such as “chini chini.”
Critics have condemned these remarks as offensive and dehumanizing, arguing that they reinforce damaging stereotypes about people from Northeast India.
The complainants have highlighted the incorrect pronunciation of Tripura's name during the incident, which has intensified public anger.
The video led to significant criticism, with calls for Amir to face legal consequences for his actions.
In light of the escalating backlash, Amir yesterday posted an apology on social media, claiming the incident was scripted, even though he still mispronounced Tripura's name.
Delhi Police’s Special Police Unit for North Eastern Region (SPUNER) has also referred the matter to its Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit for investigation into the viral footage. Officials said Delhi Police was coordinating with Tripura Police in the case.
