Police arrest 49-year-old mason in Agartala for molesting a tribal student of Tripura University

Agartala, Apr 17 (UNI) Tripura police on Thursday arrested a 49-year-old mason from the Battala area of the city on the charge of molesting a tribal student of Tripura University during travel by a passenger auto and forwarded him to a local court.
Police said the accused has been identified as Shyamal Das, a resident of Udaipur under Gomati district, and residing in a rented house at Indranagar area of the city.
After the victim girl uploaded a video, it had gone viral and came to the notice of Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, which prompted police to launch a search operation.
She was allegedly molested while traveling in a passenger auto from G B Bazaar of the city on her way to Tripura University on Wednesday by the accused, who was a co-passenger in the auto.
“When she boarded an auto, Shyamal began making obscene gestures and touched the student inappropriately. The student managed to record parts of the abuse on her mobile phone and later shared the ordeal on social media, calling for justice,” police said.
Responding swiftly, the Chief Minister directed police to take immediate action, and police launched a search against the accused based on the video footage. The city patrol team found him in the Battala area in a crowd and detained him. He admitted the crime and pleaded guilty during interrogation.
CM Dr Saha said, “Our government prioritizes the safety and dignity of our daughters and mothers, ensuring zero tolerance for lawbreakers. Such appreciable use of social media and the courage of our girls against the wrongdoers sends a strong message.”
