Death of undertrial in Tripura sparked tension

Agartala, June 30 (UNI) The residents of Goalabasti, close to the Civil Secretariat complex and High Court here, launched an agitation seeking justice after the death of a 60-year-old undertrial in the central jail yesterday.
The family members and neighbours accused police of torturing him in custody, and the jail authority didn’t provide him with due medical care, which resulted in his death. The victim has been identified as Kailash Roy.
He was declared dead after being brought to Bishalgarh Sub-divisional hospital.
The family alleged that Roy had been remanded to the correctional facility just days earlier in connection with a fight. Before jail custody, he was under police remand for three days, and the family alleged police might have tortured him, and after being sent to jail, he was not given proper treatment.
They have demanded that his body be returned to them in the same condition in which he was taken into custody, refusing to accept it until then. After waiting for the family for an extended period at the hospital, the police authorities transported Roy’s body to the mortuary at GBP Hospital in Agartala.
However, police said his health deteriorated suddenly in jail, prompting authorities to shift him to the hospital. Reportedly, he passed away on the way.
