BJP worker hacked to death, shot at close range in Malda; one arrested

Siliguri, Oct 22 (UNI) A 27-year-old BJP worker was allegedly hacked to death with sharp weapons and then shot at close range at Ramkeli in the Mahadipur area under English Bazar police station in West Bengal's Malda district on Wednesday night, triggering tension in the locality.
Police have arrested one person in connection with the murder, while the prime accused, popularly known as Satru Ghosh, remains absconding.
The deceased, identified as Samir Ghosh, was allegedly attacked at his residence. According to family members, the assailants first hacked him with sharp weapons and then opened fire on him. Several other people were reportedly injured in the incident.
Malda Superintendent of Police Anupam Singh said Rajen Ghosh had been arrested and raids were underway to apprehend the other accused. Police and central forces have been deployed in the area to prevent further escalation of tension. An investigation is underway.
The deceased’s brother, Bibek Ghosh, alleged that the murder stemmed from longstanding political rivalry.
He claimed that Samir was a BJP worker and that the accused belonged to the Trinamool Congress. The allegations are yet to be established through the investigation.
BJP South Malda district president Ajay Ganguly said Samir was a grassroots-level party worker who had worked for Amlan Bhadhuri, the BJP MLA from English Bazar.
According to Ganguly, Samir had been trying to curb alleged illegal activities along the India-Bangladesh border on the instructions of the party leadership.
Ganguly alleged that the killing was linked to Samir’s efforts to challenge illegal activities in the border belt.
He claimed that the absence of the rule of law over the past 15 years had allowed unlawful activities to flourish in the area. The BJP demanded exemplary punishment for those responsible.
Sources said that a few days ago, police and the Border Security Force (BSF) had intercepted a lorry carrying stone chips and allegedly recovered narcotic substances from it. Investigators have yet to establish whether the incident was connected to the murder.
Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress leader Biswajit Ghosh claimed that the incident stemmed from longstanding enmity between two families and alleged that some political leaders were giving it a political colour.
Police are investigating all aspects of the case, including the motive behind the killing and the alleged involvement of the absconding accused.
