Bengal: Prime accused among 3 arrested in BJP worker murder case in Malda

Siliguri, Oct 23 (UNI) Police have arrested three people, including the prime accused, Shatru Ghosh, in connection with the murder of a 27-year-old BJP worker, Samir Ghosh, at Ramkeli in the Mahadipur area under English Bazar police station in Malda district.
The arrests followed overnight raids conducted by police to apprehend the accused.
The victim, Samir Ghosh, was allegedly hacked to death with sharp weapons and then shot at close range at his residence on Wednesday night, triggering tension in the locality.
Police first arrested an accused identified as Rajen Ghosh. Subsequently, following raids throughout Thursday night, the police arrested the prime accused, Shatru Ghosh, and another accused, Chhoton Ghosh. Raids are continuing to trace the remaining accused, police sources said.
According to family members, the assailants first attacked Samir with sharp weapons before opening fire on him. Several other people were reportedly injured in the incident.
The deceased’s brother, Bibek Ghosh, had alleged that the murder stemmed from longstanding political rivalry. He claimed that Samir was a BJP worker and that the accused belonged to the Trinamool Congress. The allegations are yet to be established through the investigation.
BJP South Malda district president Ajay Ganguly said Samir was a grassroots-level party worker who had worked for Amlan Bhadhuri, the BJP MLA from English Bazar. He demanded exemplary punishment for those responsible for the killing.
Trinamool Congress leader Biswajit Ghosh, however, claimed that the incident stemmed from longstanding enmity between two families and alleged that some political leaders were giving it a political colour.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the murder, including the motive and the alleged involvement of the remaining accused.
