Bengal: Undertrial "fake doctor" dies in Baruipur hospital, wife alleges custodial torture

Kolkata, Oct 27 (UNI) A 44-year-old undertrial prisoner, who was arrested on charges of using unauthorised medical degrees, died at Baruipur Sub-Divisional Hospital on Tuesday morning, triggering allegations of custodial torture by his wife and raising questions about the circumstances surrounding his death.
The deceased, Basudeb Naskar, a resident of Betberia in Baruipur, had been arrested a few days ago along with two others on charges of practising medicine without valid certificates. He was subsequently remanded to judicial custody and lodged at Baruipur Correctional Home.
According to his wife, Sonali Naskar, she received no official communication from the police regarding her husband's illness or his admission to hospital. She said she went to the correctional home on Monday to meet him but was told that he was no longer there and had been shifted to Baruipur Sub-Divisional Hospital.
Sonali alleged that when she reached the hospital, she found her husband lying on a bed with his hands and legs tied. She returned home after seeing him and came back to the hospital at around 10.30 am on Tuesday. However, she was informed that he had died.
Alleging foul play, Sonali claimed that there were injury marks on her husband's body and accused the authorities of torturing him in custody. She also questioned why the family had not been informed about his hospitalisation or death.
"My husband was picked up on false charges and beaten to death. I want justice," she alleged.
Sonali also maintained that her husband possessed valid qualifications to practise medicine and disputed the allegations against him. She demanded a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to his death.
The body is scheduled to be sent for post-mortem examination. The findings are expected to help establish the cause of death. Neither the police nor the hospital authorities had issued any statement on the allegations or the circumstances surrounding Naskar's death till Tuesday. Human Rights activist Vijay Kumar Singh demanded a thorough probe into the death of the victim.
The incident has also revived concerns over the safety and monitoring of undertrial prisoners receiving medical treatment in the hospital.
On October 13, another undertrial prisoner, Azharul Laskar, was found dead in a bathroom at Baruipur Sub-Divisional Hospital. The death of two undertrial prisoners at the same hospital within the same month has raised questions about security arrangements and the supervision of inmates admitted for treatment.
However, it remains unclear whether the two incidents are connected. The exact circumstances of Naskar's death and the allegations made by his wife are yet to be established.
The post-mortem report and the outcome of any official inquiry are likely to be crucial in determining the circumstances that led to the death.
