Bengal: Three FIRs filed over SRFTI clash, no arrests yet

Kolkata, Sep 28 (UNI) Three separate FIRs have been registered at Panchasayar Police Station in connection with the clash at the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI), with police launching an investigation, even as no one has been detained or arrested so far.
One FIR was lodged by the Akhil Bharatiya Grahak Panchayat Samiti, an RSS affiliate, another by a section of the students, while the third was registered by police suo motu.
The incident took place on Sunday afternoon when an event organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Grahak Panchayat Samiti was being held at the SRFTI auditorium. The organisation had booked the auditorium for the programme.
According to the organisers, SFI members arrived at the venue during the event and questioned why the programme was being held in an educational institution's auditorium. They alleged that the students tore down banners and images of Bharat Mata and Swami Vivekananda without listening to their explanation.
The students, however, alleged that the RSS-affiliated organisation had been allowed to hold the programme without informing the general student body. They further claimed that organisers taunted them by calling them "militants" and "Bangladeshis" and that students were beaten when they protested. The SFI also alleged that female students were subjected to aggression. Both sides have traded allegations over the violence.
Slogans of "Jai Shri Ram" and "Jai Bhim" were raised on the campus and were countered by chants of "Azadi".
A large police contingent led by the Deputy Commissioner reached the spot after receiving information about the clash. Tensions flared repeatedly in the presence of the police, with a scuffle breaking out between students and the organisers.
There were also allegations that an individual was beaten and nearly stripped naked before police rescued him. Students claimed that several of them were injured in the melee, while an ambulance was brought onto the SRFTI campus to evacuate the injured. Several injured people were subsequently taken to hospital. Reports said around 30 students and two faculty members were injured in the clash.
The organisers later accused the police of non-cooperation.
The Deputy Commissioner (East) said, "We cannot act outside the law. Action will be taken against the accused in accordance with the law."
The situation returned to near normal thereafter, with police continuing to maintain a presence outside the institute. UNI BGA NST CDS
