Odisha: Jagatsinghpur heritage walk explores ancient Jhankeswar Mahadev temple

Bhubaneswar, Nov 2 (UNI) An ancient Shiva shrine, believed to date back to the 9th-10th century AD, took centre stage during the 21st Jagatsinghpur Heritage Walk, as participants explored the historic Jhankeswar Mahadev Temple at Biritola in Odisha's Jagatsinghpur district.
Located in the Tirtol block, the temple is believed to be contemporaneous with the Sarala Temple at Jhankad. Though the present structure is a modern reconstruction, it preserves several ancient relics, including a graceful Uma-Maheshwara idol and sculptures of attendant deities such as Ajaikapada Bhairava, Mahishamardini Durga, Ganesha, Kartikeya and Parvati.
Ranjan Kumar Panda, chief priest of the Sarala Temple, attended the event as chief speaker and spoke on Maa Sarala, poet Sarala Das, Nanda Deula, the Vruddha Nadi and the historical significance of the Jhankeswar shrine. These subjects also feature in his book, Sri Chandi Sarala Madala.
Situated in the historically significant Jhankad Kshetra, the temple reflects the region’s close association with Shaivism and Shaktism. Local traditions also link the sacred landscape of Jhankad with 15th-century poet Sarala Das, revered for composing the Odia Mahabharat.
Around 25 heritage enthusiasts joined the walk, led by JHW convenor Srikant Singh. Biswaranjan Dehury, convenor of Odisha Heritage Walks, said Jajpur Heritage Walks would begin its monthly activities in the district from the first week of December.
