Cyclone Murasu Alert:Odisha evacuates over 1.6 lakh people,3.33 lakhs identified for relocation

Bhubaneswar, Nov2 (UNI) With Cyclone Murasu posing a potential threat to southern Odisha, the state government has stepped up precautionary measures, evacuating more than 1.6 lakh people from vulnerable areas across five districts to ensure their safety.
The state administration has set an evacuation target of over 3.33 lakh people as authorities remain on high alert amid forecasts of heavy rainfall.
According to the Special Relief Commissioner's (SRC) office, a total of 1,60,021 people have so far been relocated to safer locations in Gajapati, Ganjam, Malkangiri, Koraput and Kandhamal districts. The administration has identified 3,33,752 people for evacuation from vulnerable areas as part of its ongoing preparedness efforts.
Ganjam district has recorded the highest number of evacuations, with 1,51,434 people already shifted to safer places. Evacuation operations are continuing in other affected districts, with local administrations working to move residents away from high-risk areas.
To accommodate the displaced population, the government has made arrangements at 2,441 cyclone shelters and other designated facilities across the affected districts. Of these, 552 shelters are currently operational to provide immediate refuge to people evacuated from vulnerable locations.
Special arrangements have also been made to protect pregnant women during the emergency. Authorities have identified 1,068 pregnant women across the five districts and shifted them safely to hospitals or designated shelters to ensure uninterrupted medical care and necessary assistance.
Meanwhile, District Emergency Operation Centres (DEOCs) have been made fully operational in all the affected districts. Senior government officials have also been deployed to monitor the developing weather situation, coordinate evacuation activities and oversee emergency response and relief operations.
Light to moderate rainfall has already been reported in several parts of southern Odisha, while forecasts of heavy rainfall have prompted authorities to intensify their precautionary measures.
As a preventive step, the administration has ordered the closure of schools, colleges and Anganwadi centres in vulnerable districts to minimise risks to students, children and staff.
District administrations have appealed to residents to remain in safe locations, cooperate with evacuation teams and strictly follow official advisories. People living in vulnerable and low-lying areas have been urged not to take unnecessary risks and to move to designated shelters whenever instructed.
With evacuation and relief operations continuing across southern Odisha, the state government remains on high alert, with emergency response teams and district authorities closely monitoring the situation to deal with any eventuality arising from Cyclone Murasu.
