Cyclone Murasu spares Odisha; govt intensifies post-Arnab restoration

Bhubaneswar, Nov 3 (UNI) With Cyclone Murasu sparing Odisha, the State Government has shifted its focus to assessing the damage caused by Cyclone Arnab, deploying four IAS officers and facilitating a Central team's field inspection.
Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari said on Tuesday that Murasu entered Andhra Pradesh late Monday night and was moving towards Telangana. Odisha has so far remained largely unaffected, recording an average rainfall of around 2 mm in the past 24 hours. Puri received the highest rainfall of 12 mm, while Malkangiri, Koraput and Ganjam recorded 10 mm or less.
Reviewing the post-cyclone situation, Pujari said four IAS officers had been appointed Additional Special Relief Commissioners (SRCs) to expedite damage assessment, compensation and restoration of infrastructure in the affected districts. Pawan Kumar has been assigned Gajapati, Ajit Kumar and Tejaswini Behera Ganjam, and Shiva Malavya Kandhamal.
Meanwhile, a Central team currently assessing the damage caused by Cyclone Arnab visited Gajapati on Tuesday and is scheduled to visit Ganjam on Wednesday before returning to Bhubaneswar. The respective District Collectors are coordinating the field visits and facilitating inspections. Collectors have also been directed to submit preliminary damage assessment reports at the earliest, followed by comprehensive reports for submission to the Centre.
The government has evacuated around 1.65 lakh people from six districts and opened 592 permanent and temporary shelters. Ganjam accounted for the highest number of evacuees at 1,52,010, followed by Kandhamal (6,269), Malkangiri (5,073), Koraput (1,101), Rayagada (736) and Gajapati (620).
As many as 54 ODRAF teams, nine NDRF teams and over 100 Fire Service teams have been deployed in the affected districts. Restoration of damaged infrastructure is being carried out on a war footing by various departments.
Pujari said Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi had already announced compensation for damage to houses, agricultural land and businesses caused by Cyclone Arnab. Schools in the affected districts remain largely closed, with decisions on reopening left to the respective district administrations.UNI MK
