Central team arrives in Odisha to assess Cyclone Arnab damage; state on high alert as another storm looms

Bhubaneswar, Nov 2 (UNI) Amid efforts to restore normalcy in cyclone- and flood-hit areas, a Central Government team has arrived in Odisha to assess the damage caused by Cyclone Arnab and the subsequent heavy rainfall, even as the state braces for the possible impact of another cyclonic system over the Bay of Bengal.
The central team is scheduled to visit Ganjam and Gajapati districts, among the worst-affected areas, to take stock of the damage and review the situation, Odisha Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari said on Monday.
The minister said the state government had placed its entire disaster management machinery on high alert and intensified relief, rescue and restoration operations in the affected districts. At the same time, comprehensive preparations were underway to tackle the possible threat posed by another cyclonic storm.
Reaffirming the government's commitment to safeguarding lives and property, Pujari said the administration was fully prepared to deal with any eventuality and its aftermath.
Expressing hope that the approaching cyclonic system would have a limited impact on Odisha, he said the government was closely monitoring the evolving weather situation. He also expressed hope that, by the grace of Lord Jagannath, the state would experience minimal damage.
The minister appealed to people not to panic but remain vigilant and strictly follow advisories issued by the authorities.
Pujari made these remarks while chairing a high-level review meeting at the office of the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) at Rajiv Bhavan in Bhubaneswar. The meeting was attended by Additional Chief Secretary of the Revenue and Disaster Management Department Aravind Kumar Padhee and SRC Rajesh Prabhakar Patil.
The meeting reviewed the impact of Cyclone Arnab and the subsequent floods, the progress of ongoing relief and restoration operations, and the state's preparedness to deal with another possible cyclonic storm.
According to the assessment presented at the meeting, the approaching cyclonic system, Murusu, has intensified into a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal.
The system was located approximately 160 km from Nellore, 180 km from Chennai and Kavali, 210 km from Ongole and 240 km from Machilipatnam. Wind speeds at the time of landfall are likely to reach 100-110 kmph.
Several districts of Odisha, including Ganjam, Gajapati, Koraput, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Kandhamal, Kalahandi and Puri, could experience the impact of the weather system.
The state government is closely monitoring the situation and has directed the concerned departments and district administrations to remain prepared to respond swiftly to any emerging emergency.
