CPI(M) urges Odisha govt to check price rise ahead of cyclone

Bhubaneswar, Oct 25 (UNI) The CPI (M) Odisha State Secretariat on Sunday urged the state government to curb soaring prices of essential commodities and intensify cyclone preparedness, warning that traders could exploit the situation to indulge in hoarding and black marketing.
In a statement, party state secretary Suresh Chandra Panigrahy said rising prices of potatoes, onions, rice, pulses, edible oil and vegetables had compounded the hardships of daily wage workers, peasants, agricultural labourers and other low-income groups.
The party demanded daily monitoring of commodity prices, inspections of wholesale markets and warehouses, and stringent action against hoarding, black marketing and artificial shortages. It also called for adequate stocks and uninterrupted supplies of food, drinking water, medicines and dry rations, particularly in cyclone-prone areas.
