Centre, Odisha focus clearing bottlenecks in National Waterway-5 project

Bhubaneswar, Nov 4 (UNI) The Centre and Odisha Government have reviewed key hurdles in the development of the 588-km National Waterway-5 (NW-5), including land acquisition, statutory clearances, infrastructure maintenance and water availability for navigation, officials said on Wednesday.
The issues came up at a high-level meeting attended by Chief Secretary Anu Garg, union Ports, Shipping and Waterways Secretary Vijay Kumar, industry stakeholders and senior State Government officials on Tuesday.
The proposed waterway comprises a 332-km riverine stretch from Talcher to Paradip/Dhamra, entirely within Odisha, and a 256-km canal stretch from Dhamra to Geonkhali in West Bengal. The project is currently awaiting approval.
The meeting reviewed pending issues requiring coordination between the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and the State Government, including land acquisition and transfer for terminals and hydraulic structures, maintenance of assets and release of water to maintain the required Least Available Depth (LAD).
Other issues discussed included development of the Khalpal Navigational Lock, construction and dismantling of bridges, last-mile road connectivity, and shifting of high- and low-tension power lines.
The meeting also deliberated on key projects such as Bahuda Muhan Port, the proposed shipbuilding cluster at Kenapara, and a cruise terminal at Puri.
Garg assured the Centre of the State's full support for timely implementation of NW-5 and other strategic projects aimed at boosting industrial growth, port-led development and cruise tourism in Odisha.
