Fresh wave of African Swine Fever kills over 2,500 pigs in Mizoram

Aizawl, Apr 20 (UNI) Mizoram is once again battling a fresh outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF), with the virus claiming 2,527 pigs so far this year and forcing the culling of 873 more to contain its spread, state veterinary officials said on Sunday.
The recurrence of the highly contagious porcine disease was officially confirmed by a Guwahati-based laboratory on March 20. Since then, the outbreak has primarily affected four urban centres — Siaha, Lawngtlai, Zawlnuam and Lunglei — with authorities saying rural areas remain unaffected for now.
The southern town of Siaha has emerged as the worst-hit, reporting 1,347 pig deaths, followed closely by Lawngtlai with 1,001 fatalities. Zawlnuam in Mamit district recorded 166 deaths, while Lunglei reported 13.
On Sunday alone, 33 pig deaths were reported — 30 in Siaha and 3 in Lawngtlai — while veterinary teams culled another 5 pigs in Siaha as a precautionary measure.
“Though the virus has caused significant losses in urban pockets, we are closely monitoring the situation and taking steps to prevent its spread to rural areas,” an animal husbandry official said, noting that the infection remains confined to 44 localities in the four towns.
Of the 873 pigs culled so far, the majority — 520 — were from Siaha, followed by 297 in Lawngtlai, 33 in Zawlnuam and 22 in Lunglei.
Mizoram has witnessed recurring ASF outbreaks in recent years, impacting both livelihoods and food security in the state, where pork is a staple protein source. UNI ZS SSP
