Nagaland private practitioners asked to follow govt protocols on TB management

Dimapur, Oct 26 (UNI) As Nagaland continues to report a significant number of TB cases, a development described as a matter of concern, private practitioners have been asked to stay familiar with government policies, protocols, and the latest treatment guidelines for diagnosing and managing the disease.
The National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP) organised a sensitisation programme on TB updates for private practitioners in the state at Kohima, an official report said on Monday.
The programme aimed to familiarise private practitioners with the latest developments in TB prevention, diagnosis and treatment, while strengthening collaboration between the public and private healthcare sectors towards achieving the goal of TB elimination.
In his address, Dr T Yetovi Tuccu, chief medical officer, Kohima, highlighted the importance of the programme in keeping healthcare providers updated on the latest developments in TB management and strengthening coordinated efforts to combat the disease.
Emphasising the role of private healthcare providers in TB elimination, he pointed out that many patients sought medical care from private clinics, hospitals and individual practitioners.
Tuccu stressed that all healthcare providers must adhere to government-prescribed guidelines rather than independently adopting treatment approaches, as inconsistent practices could have serious consequences for patients and public health. The importance of counselling patients, particularly those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, was also emphasised.
He also observed that financial difficulties and challenges in accessing healthcare could lead some patients to discontinue treatment after experiencing initial relief, increasing the risk of relapse and drug-resistant TB.
Private practitioners were urged to counsel patients on the importance of completing the full course of treatment and to refer those requiring additional support to government healthcare facilities.
