Meghalaya govt ready to resume peace talks with HNLC, says Dy CM

Shillong, July 3 (UNI) Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home, Prestone Tynsong said the government was ready to resuming peace talks with the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC).

The HNLC, a militant group in Meghalaya, withdrew from the tripartite peace talks with the Centre and the state government in January 2024, citing “general demands and general amnesty” to their cadres have not been met.

“The door to talks with the HNLC is still open and the government is ready to talk to them. It is up to them to decide. If they want to contact us, we are ready,” Tynsong told reporters on Wednesday.

On the recent surrender of two HNLC cadres to the Meghalaya Police, he said, “Their decision to surrender was because they realised that being in the outfit would not lead them anywhere.”

The two HNLC cadres -- the Dibarius Jyrwa (32) and Ridor Lyngdoh Nonglait (30) who escaped from HNLC’s hideout in Bangladesh -- cited frustration over being assigned only menial and cultivation-related tasks for over 15 months.

Appealing to other HNLC members to surrender, Tynsong highlighted the benefits of rejoining the mainstream.

“I appeal to other members also to kindly follow the footsteps of the two persons, who recently surrendered before the police,” the Deputy Chief Minister said.

Reacting to HNLC's threat against a pharmacy owner in the Shillong city, Tynsong said the government would protect citizens and ensure that the law prevails.

“Nobody can take law into their own hands. Let the law prevail. Whether HNLC or anybody who just gives that kind of threat, the government is there to protect them,” he said, adding the authorities are alert to such threats.

Bhubaneswar, July 4 (UNI) BJD chief Naveen Patnaik has strongly condemned the remarks made by BJP MLA Santosh Khatua against senior BJD leader Lekhashree Samantasinghar, calling them "deeply disturbing and unacceptable."
Taking to his social media platform X, Patnaik said, "Publicly defaming a woman as a political response reflects a sick mentality and is aimed at silencing women in public life. This sends a message that all women should remain silent."
The leader of Opposition in the Odisha Assembly further stated, “What is even more disheartening is the complete silence of BJP leaders. Not a single member has come forward to condemn the MLA’s hateful comment or hold him accountable.”
Patnaik added that the lack of response from the ruling party reflects its true stance on women in public life. “Before offering advice on women’s empowerment, political leaders must first learn the basic principle of respecting women,” he said.

Bhubaneswar, July 4 (UNI) The Orissa High Court has granted 10-day interim bail to Chintan Raghuvanshi, deputy director of the Enforcement Directorate’s regional office, who was arrested by the CBI on the bribery charge in May last, to enable him to see his newborn baby. "The birth experience of a child in a family, more particularly the bondage of father to new born baby, cannot ordinarily be expressed in words,” the court observed.
