Fear of landslide forces Kamrup admin to impose restrictions in Kamakhya temple during Ambubachi

Guwahati, June 16 (UNI) With several locations of the Nilachal Hills, that houses the revered Ma Kamakhya temple, identified as landslide prone, the Kamrup district administration along with the Guwahati Police and the Kamakhya temple authority have decided to take adequate steps to ensure smooth sailing of the Ambubachi festival.
Addressing a joint press conference on Monday, Guwahati city Police Commissioner Partha Sarathi Mahanta said that everyone has to be careful while visiting the temple as several locations of the Nilachal Hills have been identified as landslide prone.
The police and civil administration has also decided to station the National Disaster Rescue Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Rescue Force (SDRF) teams in the identified landslide prone locations in the Nilacha Hills during the Ambubachi festival.
The annual Ambubachi festival begins on June 22 and ends on June 26 this year and like previous years, the temple authority have been expecting a huge rush of devotees.
“There will be only one way entry to the temple this time. The entry point from Pandu side will be closed. We have also arranged for time restriction from 5 am to 6 pm every day during the Ambubachi festival. This is done to control the rush,” Mahanta said adding that entry of devotees will be restricted after 6 pm.
He said that the movement of vehicular traffic to the temple will be closed to ensure safety and that the devotees will have to walk to the top the Nilachal Hills only.
Kabindra Sarma, the Doloi (priest) of the temple, said that the sanctum sanctorum of the temple will be closed at 2.56 pm on June 22 due to Ambubachi and that it will be opened after June 26, following which the devotees can visit the temple.
From June 28, he said, the regular visit of the temple will start. The temple authority has also decided to do away with the VIP pass system and said that everyone will be treated as a VIP only.
