40 displaced families return to Nanoor’s Papuri village after 17 years following Calcutta High Court order

Nanoor, Sep 28 (UNI) Nearly 40 families displaced from Papuri village in Nanoor have returned to their ancestral homes after nearly 17 years, following an intervention by the Calcutta High Court.
The families returned to the village this month under the supervision of a large police contingent from Nanoor police station, following directions from a bench of Justice Saugat Bhattacharya. On reaching Papuri, members of the families visited their abandoned properties and met residents.
Nanoor is a historical village and community development block in the Bolpur subdivision of Birbhum district in West Bengal
According to local sources, the families had fled the village in 2009 following political clashes between the CPI(M) and the Trinamool Congress. Five people were killed in the violence in February that year.
The families had attempted to return with police assistance in 2011 and 2016, but were unable to stay for long. They alleged that they faced harassment and were denied access to basic facilities, including government services, drinking water and local markets.
The families have also alleged that their houses were demolished with JCB machines during post-poll violence in 2021, leaving many of them without homes.
The return has since triggered a fresh political dispute in the area. The families have alleged that local TMC leader and Nanoor MLA Kajal Sheikh and his associates were responsible for their prolonged displacement.
Sheikh has denied the allegations. He claimed that some of those who have returned are accused in murder cases and said they had fled the village following the alleged killings of Siraj Sheikh, Sadu Sheikh, Latu Sheikh, as well as his father and two brothers. He also claimed that residents were opposed to their return.
With the families now back in Papuri, police have stepped up security in the village to prevent any fresh tension or violence. Many of the returning families, however, are still without proper homes as their properties were allegedly destroyed during their years away. UNI DC NST CDS
