Kanad Purkayastha, Birendra Prasad Baishya file nomination for two vacant RS seats in Assam

Guwahati, June 9 (UNI) BJP leader Konad Purkayastha and sitting Rajya Sabha MP Birendra Prasad Baishya on Monday filed nominations for the two Rajya Sabha seats, which are likely to fall vacant on June 14 this year.
Kanad, son of former Union Minister and veteran BJP leader from Assam’s Barak Valley, Kabindra Purakayastha, filed his nomination in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the party's Assam unit President Dilip Saikia, and other cabinet Ministers of the state. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal was also present on the occasion.
Sitting Rajya Sabha MP, and AGP leader Birendra Prasad Baishya was also seen accompanied by senior AGP leaders, including Ministers Atul Bora and Keshab Mahanta, while filing the nomination for the Rajya Sabha seat. Baishya was also accompanied by Chief Minister Sarma and BJP President Dilip Saikia. The AGP has unanimously re-nominated Baishya for the seat in the Upper House of Parliament, considering his experience.
The saffron party on Saturday issued a notification naming Konad Purakayastha as the party candidate for one of the two Rajya Sabha seats. Konad has been a secretary of the saffron party in Assam. The Assam unit of the saffron party had sent a list of 13 members to the party's high command, and the party’s election committee announced the name of Konad Purakayastha for the Rajya Sabha seat.
It may be mentioned here that while the BJP is putting up Konad Purakayastha in one of the Rajya Sabha seats, the party has decided to give the other seat to its alliance partner Asom Gana Parishad (AGP).
The election to the two Rajya Sabha seats was necessitated as the terms of two Rajya Sabha MPs, BJP’s Mission Ranjan Das and AGP’s Birendra Prasad Bishya, end on June 14. According to the notifications of the Election Commission of India, the last date for filing of nomination for the Rajya Sabha election is June 9, while the election will be held on June 19 between 9 AM to 4 PM.
Scrutiny of nominations will be held on June 10 while the last date for withdrawal of nomination is June 12. The counting of votes will take place at 5 PM on June 19, the ECI notification said.
