Many rivers in Odisha are on verge of dying: Water Man Singh

Bhubaneswar, June 13 (UNI) Noted environmentalist and "Water Man" Dr. Rajendra Singh on Friday said that many rivers in Odisha are on the verge of dying.
Addressing the Odisha River Protection Conference here, Dr. Singh expressed serious concern over the deteriorating condition of the state's rivers, stating that “the health of Odisha's rivers is in a critical state.”
He warned that the overall well-being of the state is intrinsically linked to the health of its rivers, saying, "If the rivers are not healthy, the state cannot remain healthy."
Dr. Singh emphasized that the Odisha government must take urgent and effective steps to protect rivers, giving top priority to their conservation.
He urged the state government to organize a joint convention involving the Water Resources Department, environmental experts, river conservation activists, and civil society to identify the problems facing rivers and develop viable solutions.
The conference, organized by the Mahanadi Bachao Movement and the Odisha River Protection Committee, demanded that the state government release a white paper on the status of Odisha's rivers.
It also called on the government to formulate a dedicated river policy for the state and initiate efforts to raise widespread awareness about river conservation in schools and colleges.
Most speakers at the conference agreed that the condition of Odisha's rivers is alarming and emphasized the urgent need for their protection.
Former administrator Dr. Arvind Behera, speaking as a guest, remarked that "destruction in the name of development is unacceptable, just as losing one’s identity in the name of pride is also not acceptable."
Environmentalist Praful Samantray called for a broad-based mass movement by uniting all river conservation efforts across Odisha.
Eminent administrator and writer Sanjeev Hota highlighted the reasons behind the deteriorating condition of Odisha’s rivers and stressed the need to address these issues to restore river health.
Sudarshan Das, convener of the Mahanadi Bachao Movement, emphasized the necessity of launching a comprehensive river conservation movement in Odisha.
He appealed to leaders and river activists to advocate for recognizing the rights of rivers over water and land.
