Ram Bachan Rai takes charge as acting Chairman of Bihar Legislative Council

Patna, Sept 28 (UNI) Amid changing political equations in Bihar, Legislative Council Chairman Avadhesh Narayan Singh resigned from his post on Monday following which Deputy Chairman Dr Ram Bachan Rai assumed charge as the Acting Chairman of the Upper House.
Singh submitted his resignation to Rai, who accepted it. Soon after taking charge, Rai thanked the Janata Dal (United) leadership for entrusting him with the responsibility.
In a statement issued along with his resignation, Singh recalled his long political journey, which began as a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker, and his various responsibilities in the organisation. He also referred to his nearly 33-year tenure in the Legislative Council.
Singh said he had actively contributed to the expansion of the BJP while serving at various positions in the party organisation in Bihar. He expressed gratitude to leaders and workers at the central and state levels for the affection and support extended to him during his political career.
He also thanked BJP national president Nitin Nabin and state president Sanjay Sarawagi, besides leaders of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) organisation and government.
Singh expressed special gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and union Home Minister Amit Shah. He also thanked former Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, saying that he had the honour of serving as Legislative Council Chairman four times under NDA governments and received Mr Kumar''s support and cooperation in discharging the responsibility.
He also expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary for his cooperation.
The resignation comes against the backdrop of political discussions over the distribution of key constitutional posts in Bihar. The BJP currently holds the posts of Chief Minister, Assembly Speaker and Legislative Council Chairman. There had been speculation that the Legislative Council Chairman''s post could go to the JD(U). Rai's assumption of charge as Acting Chairman following Singh''s resignation is being viewed in that context.
