Jharkhand: Marandi hits out at Rahul Gandhi over poll claims

Giridih, Sep 28 (UNI) Jharkhand Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi on Monday criticised the Congress over allegations concerning the election process and accused the party of attempting to create confusion over electoral institutions.
Addressing a press conference here, Marandi said allegations raised by Congress and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi were not new and had been made on different issues since the Congress lost power at the Centre in 2014.
He said the Congress had earlier raised questions over electronic voting machines, the Rafale deal and alleged phone tapping, and was now raising allegations of “vote theft”.
Marandi said such allegations were an attempt to mislead people and claimed that the public had not accepted what he described as “baseless and fact-free” claims made by Rahul Gandhi and the Congress.
His remarks came amid a political dispute over the functioning of the Election Commission and its decision-making process. The Election Commission has maintained that decisions taken by the three-member panel, including those concerning the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, were approved unanimously.
Marandi said a recent newspaper report had been used by the Opposition to raise political questions over the Election Commission.
He said the Commission’s subsequent statement that its decisions were taken unanimously had undermined the Opposition’s allegations.
He also accused the Congress of repeatedly raising issues that, according to him, could affect public confidence in electoral institutions.
Marandi said the Congress and its allies should focus on their political organisation and refrain from making allegations without adequate evidence.
He also criticised Rahul Gandhi’s statements on the election process and said the BJP would continue to raise the issue politically.
