Meghalaya Deputy CM rules out Cabinet reshuffle amid crossovers to NPP, BJP

Shillong, Oct 23 (UNI) Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong has ruled out an immediate cabinet reshuffle, downplaying the impact of recent political defections in the state.
The statement follows the exit of several legislators from the United Democratic Party (UDP), who recently jumped ship to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the ruling National People’s Party (NPP).
“There was no precondition for the three former UDP legislators who joined the NPP recently. They have their own assignment in the government,” Tynsong said.
Asked if the veteran UDP legislator Paul Lyngdoh, who was among the three who joined the NPP, would get a cabinet berth, Tynsong said, “I am the Deputy Chief Minister, but I don’t know anything about that… I am asking you because I also don’t know.”
Tynsong, who is also the NPP state president, denied any pressure from the BJP for more berths after eight former UDP legislators joined the party recently. “No such pressure, nothing of that sort,” he said.
The NPP, which heads the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA), has seen its strength in the 60-member Assembly rise to 36 legislators after absorbing three from the UDP, while the BJP boosted its strength from two to ten following a merger with eight other UDP legislators.
All three political parties are constituents in the MDA government, which is led by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.
