CPI (M) demands enhanced relief for cyclone Arnab, flood-hit families in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, Nov 2 (UNI) The CPI (M) has accused the BJP government in Odisha of offering inadequate relief to Cyclone Arnab- and flood-hit people, saying the compensation package fails to address the scale of damage to agriculture and livelihoods.
In a statement, the party said the assistance announced by the State Government was grossly insufficient compared to the losses suffered by farmers and affected families. The government has announced compensation of Rs 8,400 per hectare for non-irrigated land, Rs 17,000 for irrigated land and Rs 22,500 for multi-crop irrigated land. Each affected family is also entitled to 50 kg of rice and assistance of up to Rs 2,500.
The CPI (M) said the package was based on outdated National and State Disaster Response Fund norms, which fail to cover several categories of crop losses and agricultural activities. Farmers whose crops have already been harvested, as well as sharecroppers and actual cultivators, risk being excluded from compensation, it said. The party urged the government to revise the norms in line with present-day requirements and substantially enhance assistance.
It demanded agricultural input subsidies of Rs 10,000 per acre for non-irrigated land, Rs 5,000 for irrigated land and Rs 25,000 for multi-crop irrigated land and year-round crops. It also sought immediate payment of compensation to affected farmers and sharecroppers.
Other demands include doubling compensation for livestock losses, providing Rs 10,000 to each affected family towards essential supplies for three months instead of 50 kg of rice, waiving outstanding agricultural loans and extending fresh interest-free loans to farmers to help them resume cultivation.
The party also demanded compensation of Rs 5 lakh for every damaged residential house.
The CPI(M) warned that it would mobilise people and launch a broad-based movement against the State Government if its demands were not met, a statement issued by the party’s State Secretariat concluded.
