Bengal CPI(M) leader Asok Bhattacharya threatens to break railway fencing at Phuleshwari

Siliguri, Sep 28 (UNI) Former minister and CPI(M) leader Asok Bhattacharya on Monday said he would break the iron fencing erected by the Railways to permanently close the level crossing at Phuleshwari in Siliguri if the authorities failed to reopen it in the interest of the people.
“We will break the railway fencing if necessary, as soon as possible,” Bhattacharya said while addressing the media.
He said that despite an underpass having been constructed around 15 years ago with the objective of eventually closing the level crossing, the gate had continued to remain operational for years.
The Railway authorities closed the Phuleshwari crossing with iron fencing two days ago, forcing thousands of residents to use the narrow underpass.
Bhattacharya said the underpass was unsuitable for heavy vehicles and was frequently affected by rainwater stagnation.
He said the level crossing was also used by FCI trucks carrying foodgrains, ambulances, fire engines and school buses.
Both the underpass and the rail gate should therefore remain operational, he said.
Bhattacharya alleged that there was a lack of coordination between the Centre and the state government and questioned how the Railways could close the crossing without the consent of the state government or the local minister.
He also demanded flyovers at key congestion points, including Sevoke Road, Junction and Hashmi Chowk, and expansion of Hill Cart Road.
Similar problems had arisen after railway gates were closed in areas such as Shiv Mandir.
Despite his illness, Bhattacharya said, he would be present at Phuleshwari if necessary to oppose the closure.
