Mass rally taken out in Imphal to demand end to conflict, action against terror creators

Imphal, Oct 31 (UNI) Thousands of people from different parts of Manipur, representing various indigenous communities, took to the streets of Imphal today in a massive rally organised by the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), along with several civil society organisations, demanding an end to the ongoing conflict, protection of indigenous identity and territorial integrity, and restoration of lasting peace in the state.
The rally witnessed participation from people across the valley and hill areas of Manipur, reflecting a collective expression of public concern over the prevailing political and security situation.
Several Naga civil society organisations also joined the mobilisation, highlighting the importance of hill-valley solidarity amid the prolonged crisis.
The rally commenced from Tiddim Ground, Kwakeithel, with participants marching towards THAU Ground, Thangmeiband.
However, the procession was stopped by security personnel at Keisampat Junction, where police had erected barricades to prevent the march from proceeding further towards the Lok Bhavan and other government establishments.
Participants carried placards and raised slogans calling for peace, justice, protection of indigenous communities and abrogation of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with Kuki armed groups.
Following the mobilisation, a six-point resolution was adopted, outlining a series of demands concerning the security situation, displacement crisis, immigration, governance and protection of Manipur's indigenous population.
The resolution demanded that the Government of India immediately stop what COCOMI described as a proxy war being waged through Kuki armed groups against the indigenous people of Manipur.
It also called for stringent action against all individuals and organisations allegedly involved in, facilitating or supporting narco-terrorism.
The resolution strongly opposed any further extension of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement between the Government of India, the Manipur Government and Chin-Kuki armed groups beyond September 24, 2026.
It demanded the closure of all designated SoO camps and strict action against the armed groups.
Calling for an immediate resolution to the displacement crisis that began on May 3, 2023, the resolution urged the Manipur Government to ensure the return of all internally displaced persons (IDPs) to their respective homes and native places.
It stressed the need for coordinated government assistance to facilitate their safe and dignified resettlement, including those currently staying in relief camps, temporary shelters and other locations.
The resolution demanded the immediate withdrawal of Assam Rifles from Manipur, stating that the force should no longer be entrusted with border security responsibilities in the state.
It proposed the deployment of another neutral and effective security force in its place.
The resolution called for an update of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur, adopting 1951 as the base year to identify genuine citizens and illegal immigrants.
It also urged the government to take concrete legal measures to identify and deport illegal immigrants while safeguarding the demographic composition, indigenous identity and territorial integrity of Manipur.
The resolution demanded the removal of Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen from her post, citing concerns over her husband's reported position as chairman of the Kuki National Front (KNF-P).
It termed her appointment inappropriate in view of the alleged association and demanded her removal.
The resolution further stated that if the government failed to act on the demand, all members of the present government should resign.
The rally and the adoption of the six-point resolution mark a significant public mobilisation amid Manipur's continuing political and security crisis.
