AAPSU holds referendum rally, demands immediate deportation of illegal immigrants

Itanagar, June 16 (UNI) The All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) on Monday held a massive referendum rally in Itanagar, reiterating its long-standing demand for the identification and deportation of illegal immigrants, particularly members of the Chakma and Hajong communities.
The rally, which commenced from Akashdeep market and culminated at Raj Bhavan, witnessed the participation of hundreds of citizens, including representatives from community-based organizations (CBOs), district students’ unions (DSUs), and members of the public.
The gathering underscored growing public concern over what AAPSU describes as a demographic and constitutional threat to the state’s indigenous identity.
After the rally, AAPSU submitted a four-point memorandum to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs through the state Chief Secretary, calling for immediate identification and deportation of all illegal immigrants, re-verification of Arunachal’s electoral rolls, and cleansing of non-APST voters from the state’s voter list.
AAPSU president Dozi Tana Tara said, “The Chakma and Hajong settlers were initially only 56 families in the 1960s. Their numbers have since grown exponentially. They are now illegally occupying land, accessing tribal benefits, and altering the demographic balance, especially in
the Tai-Khamti and Singpho regions.”
He added that this unchecked settlement violates the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation (BEFR), 1873, and undermines the rights of the state's Scheduled Tribes.
The memorandum also cited serious concerns such as land encroachment, misuse of government welfare schemes, and threats to law and order. The apex students’ body flagged a recent incident in Tissing-Singpho village, where a tribal woman’s land was allegedly seized by settlers, as a glaring example of “systemic neglect”.
Demanding urgent government action, AAPSU also questioned why illegal settlers were being allowed to integrate into society without legal scrutiny, while genuine tribal populations struggled to retain their rights.
“We are not against humanity, but we are for justice. If deportation is not possible, the Centre must consider relocating them to other states. Arunachal cannot bear this demographic burden any longer,” Tara emphatically said.
The union, meanwhile, welcomed the Centre’s recent directive to identify and deport illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar, calling it a step in the right direction.
