Vedanta plans Asansol plant, promises 10,000 direct jobs: Suvendu

Kolkata, Oct 28 (UNI) Vedanta Group founder and chairman Anil Agarwal has expressed interest in setting up a plant in Asansol in West Burdwan district, with the project expected to generate 10,000 direct employment opportunities, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said on Wednesday after meeting the industrialist at the state secretariat, Nabanna.
Adhikari said the state government would extend all possible assistance to the group to facilitate the proposed investment.
He, however, did not disclose the proposed investment amount or the details of the plant.
“He came here and we had a good meeting. He wants to set up a unit in Asansol and already has land in his possession. We will provide whatever assistance is required from our side,” the chief minister said.
According to Adhikari, Agarwal told him that Vedanta was operating in seven states but had stayed away from West Bengal because of the previous Trinamool Congress government.
“He said that he works in seven states. He did not come to West Bengal because there was a Trinamool Congress government here. He cited cut-money, hooliganism and lawlessness as reasons for not investing in the state. Now that a BJP government has come to power, he wants to invest here,” Adhikari said.
The chief minister said the proposed plant in Asansol would create 10,000 direct jobs, besides generating additional indirect employment opportunities.
“The number of jobs is important. He has said that 10,000 people will be employed directly, with more employment opportunities being created indirectly. I have assured him that the West Bengal government will extend full cooperation,” Adhikari added.
Agarwal was in Kolkata to attend an event organised by an industry body before meeting the chief minister.
Meanwhile, Adhikari announced that the state government's much-awaited industrial policy would be unveiled on November 5, ahead of Kali Puja and Diwali.
He said the policy had been finalised after consultations with industry stakeholders and consideration of suggestions from ministers.
“A group of ministers had sought the opinions of all stakeholders, and the industrial policy was subsequently placed before the Cabinet. Even after that, some ministers who were not part of the group offered suggestions. Taking those into account, the industrial policy has been finalised,” Adhikari said.
The state government had held a meeting with representatives of industry bodies and prominent industrialists at Nabanna on August 11 to discuss the policy.
Its presentation, initially expected later that month, was deferred to allow further work on the draft.
The policy is expected to outline the framework and incentives for attracting fresh industrial investment to West Bengal. UNI SAG CDS
