Bhubaneswar, Oct 23 (UNI) Emphasising Odisha’s immense tourism potential, Governor Brajmohan Ram on Friday called for an integrated and inclusive approach to tourism development, focusing on improved infrastructure, wider global promotion and greater participation of local communities.
He said coordinated efforts by the government, industry and investors could help position Odisha as a prominent destination on the national and international tourism map.
Addressing the valedictory ceremony of the 7th Odisha Tourism Conclave in Bhubaneswar, the Governor stressed the need to identify, develop and promote the unique tourism attractions of every district. He noted that Odisha’s natural wealth, historical landmarks and rich cultural traditions offered significant opportunities for tourism-led growth.

Describing tourism as a major driver of economic growth, employment generation and entrepreneurship, the Governor highlighted its links with several allied sectors, including hospitality, transport, handicrafts, local cuisine, agriculture and small businesses.
He emphasised that tourism development must go beyond attracting visitors and create sustainable livelihood opportunities for local people, while preserving the state’s cultural identity and traditional heritage.
Highlighting Odisha’s diverse tourism assets, the Governor referred to the sacred abode of Mahaprabhu Shri Jagannath, the world-renowned Sun Temple at Konark, the ancient temples of Bhubaneswar, Chilika Lake, the state’s extensive coastline, Buddhist heritage, tribal traditions and rich wildlife.
He said these varied attractions provided a strong foundation for developing tourism experiences that could appeal to domestic as well as international visitors.
The Governor observed that initiatives by the state government to strengthen tourism infrastructure, attract investment and develop new destinations, complemented by programmes of the Central government, could create fresh opportunities for the sector.
However, he underlined that better connectivity, quality accommodation, modern tourist amenities, a skilled workforce and effective digital promotion were essential to making Odisha more accessible and attractive to visitors.
Calling for diversification of tourism offerings, Ram stressed the importance of promoting eco-tourism, spiritual tourism, adventure tourism and MICE tourism, which includes meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions. He said a broader range of tourism experiences could help attract different categories of travellers and expand the sector’s economic contribution.
The Governor also called for a balanced approach to tourism growth, emphasising that environmental conservation must remain a priority. He said local communities should be active partners in planning and implementing tourism initiatives so that the benefits of development could reach people across the state, including those living in remote areas.
Stressing the importance of responsible tourism, Ram said the sector could create new opportunities for young people, strengthen local economies and bring wider recognition to Odisha’s cultural heritage.
He expressed confidence that an integrated approach involving the government, tourism stakeholders, investors and local communities could unlock the state’s tourism potential and contribute to the broader vision of a developed Odisha and a developed India.
