Samrat Choudhary stresses water security, calls for priority to Bihar’s interests in Ganga water deal

Patna, Oct 30 (UNI) Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary today called for transforming Bihar’s rivers and water resources into drivers of economic prosperity, asserting that scientific water management could turn the state’s challenges into opportunities and accelerate its overall development.
Addressing a seminar on “Ganga Water Treaty: Bihar’s Water Security” in Patna, he said adequate water availability was essential for agricultural expansion, industrial growth and the state’s overall progress. Bihar needed sufficient water for drinking, irrigation and industrial operations, and its interests must receive the highest priority in matters relating to Ganga water and the Farakka Agreement.
The Chief Minister said the state government had formulated a state-level policy on silt management to ensure the scientific removal and utilisation of silt from the Ganga and other rivers. Efforts would be made to make Ganga silt and soil available for public use, road construction and other infrastructure projects.
For this purpose, the Bihar government would enter into an agreement with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in the coming days. Choudhary also called for a comprehensive national-level policy on silt management.
Emphasising the need to construct and strengthen embankments along the Ganga, he said river management must be based on a scientific understanding of its flow patterns and other characteristics.
He suggested that experts attending the seminar be taken on an aerial survey of the Ganga to enable them to assess the river’s actual condition, flow patterns and silt accumulation and offer effective recommendations.
Describing Bihar’s rivers as a source of immense potential, Choudhary said proper management of water and silt resources could open up new opportunities in agriculture, industry, infrastructure development and employment generation.
He said the state government had set a target of providing employment and job opportunities to one crore people, noting that the effective utilisation of water resources would play an important role in achieving this objective.
“Our resolve is to make Bihar’s rivers the foundation of the state’s economic prosperity,” the Chief Minister said.
Scientific management of water resources, expert recommendations and support from the Central government would help Bihar reach new heights of development, he added.
