Cyclonic storm likely by Oct 26; Red warning for extremely heavy rain in Odisha on Oct 27-28

Bhubaneswar, Oct 23 (UNI) Odisha is bracing for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall on October 27 and 28 as a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm by the morning of October 26 and move towards the north Andhra Pradesh and adjoining south Odisha coasts, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday.
The IMD’s Bhubaneswar Regional Centre has issued a red warning for Gajapati, Ganjam and Puri districts for the 24 hours from 8.30 am on October 27 to 8.30 am on October 28, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places, with extremely heavy rainfall likely at isolated locations.
The low-pressure area formed over the southeast and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal at 5.30 am on October 23 under the influence of an upper-air cyclonic circulation extending up to 5.8 km above mean sea level.
The system is likely to intensify into a depression on October 24, a deep depression on October 25 and a cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of October 26. It is then expected to move west-northwestwards towards the north Andhra Pradesh and adjoining south Odisha coasts over the subsequent two days, with further intensification likely.
An orange warning has been issued for heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Khordha and Nayagarh districts during the same 24-hour period.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph, with gusts up to 60 kmph, are also likely at isolated places in Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagarh districts.
A yellow warning has been issued for heavy rainfall at isolated places in Angul, Boudh, Kalahandi and Nabarangpur districts, along with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds in several other districts.
Squally weather, with wind speeds of 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph, is likely along and off the Odisha coast on October 26 and 27. The sea is also expected to remain rough to very rough, prompting the IMD to advise fishermen against venturing into the sea during the two days.
