Researchers discover new scorpion species in Similipal tiger reserve

Bhubaneswar, Nov 6 (UNI) In a significant addition to Odisha’s biodiversity records, researchers have identified a new scorpion species in Similipal Tiger Reserve, the first of its genus to be recorded in the State.
Named Liocheles Similipalensis, the species measures 44–53 mm and is distinguished by its glossy bluish-black appearance.
It was found in rocky habitats within tropical moist deciduous forests at an altitude of around 1,000 metres in the reserve.
The discovery was made by a team from the Thackeray Wildlife Foundation (TWF) in collaboration with Similipal Tiger Reserve officials.
The research team comprised Saurabh Kininge, Tejas Thackeray, Akshay Khandekar and Similipal Field Director Prakash Chand Gogineni.
The specimens, initially collected by forest personnel, underwent detailed taxonomic examination.
Researchers identified distinct morphological characteristics that differentiate the species from the six previously known members of the Liocheles genus.
The species has been named after Similipal, which is its only confirmed habitat so far. With this discovery, the number of recognised species in the genus has increased to seven.
Researchers have called for further field surveys and DNA-based studies to establish its geographical distribution and understand its evolutionary relationships with other members of the genus.
