Director Atlee conferred with doctorate by Sathyabama University

Chennai, June 15 (UNI) Esteemed filmmaker Atlee has been awarded an honorary doctorate by Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, in recognition of his exceptional contribution to Indian cinema.
This prestigious honour was given during the 34th convocation held on Saturday, marking a moment of profound significance for the director, who is also an alumnus of the university. The Chancellor of the University, Dr. Mariazeena Johnson handed over the doctorate certificate and memento to Atlee. The event was attended by his wife Priya and his parents, which made this moment even more special.
His oeuvre, beginning with "Raja Rani" and followed by hits like "Theri", "Mersal", "Bigil" and the 2023 pan India hit "Jawaan" starring Shahrukh Khan, has been praised for marrying mass appeal with narrative flair.
Speaking at the convocation, Atlee became emotional and shared memories of his student life. “It’s surreal to be honoured by the same university where I once walked in as a student with big dreams. It was here that I learned the power of belief,” he shared.
He also took a moment to remember the late Founder Chancellor of the institution, Jeppiaar and shared, “Many know Jeppiaar sir supported my education. But he did much more — he encouraged my creativity. I once told him I wanted to make a short film. He simply said, ‘Pick up a camera and become a director soon.’ That moment changed my life.”
The director also conveyed his gratitude to his family, “My parents stood by me until I became a filmmaker. But the one who shaped who I am is my wife, Priya Atlee. And the person who’s made me a better human being is my son,” he said.
After the monumental success of "Jawaan", Atlee is now gearing up for his next directorial venture. A high octane pan India action drama starring Allu Arjun and Deepika Padukone in the lead roles. The film is currently in the making with the working title of "#AA22xA6" and is produced by Kalanithi Maran's Sun Pictures. UNI NST SSP
