Messi will play in Kerala, reiterates sports minister

Thiruvananthapuram, June 7 (UNI) Amid swirling speculation over the possible cancellation of an exhibition match involving global football icon Lionel Messi, Kerala Sports Minister V Abdurahiman on Saturday reaffirmed that the much-anticipated event is very much on.

"World Champion Argentina football team will visit Kerala," the minister said in a social media post, adding that Messi — fondly known as King Leo — is confirmed to participate in the match.

His clarification comes in the wake of reports suggesting uncertainty around the event, prompting concern among fans and stakeholders. The minister’s post has brought a sense of relief to football lovers across the state who are eagerly awaiting the historic visit.

However, the match has come under severe criticism from several quarters, with opposition parties and social media users questioning the timing, purpose, and expenditure involved in bringing the high-profile team to the state.

Critics have accused the government of prioritising spectacle over substance, particularly at a time when the state is grappling with pressing issues such as unemployment, debt, and infrastructure deficits.

"The government should focus on developing grassroots sports and improving facilities for local athletes, rather than spending crores on a celebrity-driven event," said a senior opposition leader.

There is also uncertainty over who is financing the visit, with concerns raised over transparency and the potential use of public funds. A few netizens also pointed out past instances of international sports visits being announced with fanfare but ultimately cancelled due to logistical issues or miscommunication.

Messi, who captained Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar in 2022, remains one of the most celebrated athletes in the world. His visit is expected to draw massive crowd and international media attention, with thousands likely to travel to Kerala for a glimpse of the footballing legend.
