Centre to issue Rs 100 commemorative coin marking 1,000 years of Modhera Sun Temple

New Delhi, Sep 18 (UNI) The Centre will issue a Rs 100 commemorative coin to mark the 1,000th anniversary of the Modhera Sun Temple in Gujarat, according to a notification issued by the union Finance Ministry on Friday.
The Department of Economic Affairs notified the Coinage (Issue of commemorative coin on the occasion of 1,000 Years of Modhera Sun Temple, Gujarat) Rules, 2026, under the Coinage Act, 2011.
The rules will come into force from the date of their publication in the Official Gazette.
Under the notification, G.S.R. 825(E), dated September 18, 2026, a coin in the denomination of Rs 100 will be minted under the authority of the Central Government to commemorate the 1,000th anniversary of the Modhera Sun Temple.
The commemorative coin will be circular, 44 millimetres in diameter and have 200 serrations on its edge. It will be made of nickel silver, comprising 60 per cent copper, 20 per cent nickel and 20 per cent zinc.
The coin will have a standard weight of 32 grams. The notification allows the actual weight to range from 31.2 grams to 32.8 grams. It also permits limited variation in the metal composition: copper may range between 59 and 61 per cent, while nickel and zinc may each range between 19 and 21 per cent.
The Finance Ministry has also prescribed the design of both sides of the commemorative coin.
On the obverse, the coin will carry the Lion Capital of the Ashoka Pillar at the centre with “Satyameva Jayate” inscribed below it. “Bharat” in Devanagari will appear on the left periphery and “INDIA” in English on the right.
The rupee symbol and the denominational value “100” will appear below the Lion Capital.
The reverse will feature the motif of the Modhera Sun Temple at the centre.
The upper periphery will carry the Devanagari inscription commemorating 1,000 years of the Modhera Sun Temple in Gujarat, while “1026-2026” will be inscribed above the temple motif.
The lower periphery will carry the English inscription “1000 YEARS OF MODHERA SUN TEMPLE, GUJARAT”.
