Delhi to set up 250 idol collection kiosks to curb pollution, says CM Rekha Gupta

New Delhi, Oct 15 (UNI) As the city celebrates the Navratri festival, the Delhi government announced it will set up 250 idol collection kiosks across Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) wards to ensure the respectful disposal of idols and worship materials.
The initiative, launched under the direction of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the MCD and Plastindia Foundation at the Delhi Secretariat on Thursday.
Of the proposed collection centres, 60 kiosks have already been installed by the foundation, which has developed and supplied them free of cost.
The initiative seeks to balance religious traditions with environmental protection by providing designated locations where residents can deposit damaged idols and other materials after religious rituals.
The collected items will be segregated and sent for appropriate management and recycling.
Gupta said religious traditions and environmental responsibility must go hand in hand, emphasising that respect for nature is an integral part of India's cultural heritage.
“Faith and devotion are integral to our cultural heritage, but protecting the environment and fulfilling our civic responsibilities are equally important,” the Chief Minister said, adding that the respectful collection of idols and worship materials after religious rituals was the need of the hour.
She said the initiative would provide residents with a practical way to honour their religious sentiments while ensuring responsible disposal of religious materials.
Appealing to citizens to use the designated collection centres, Gupta urged them not to leave damaged idols and worship materials on roads, in open spaces or in water bodies. “Even a small positive effort by every citizen can make a significant contribution to making Delhi clean, beautiful and environmentally friendly,” she said.
Under the agreement, the MCD will oversee the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the kiosks after they are formally handed over. Its responsibilities will include deploying staff, maintaining cleanliness, collecting deposited materials and ensuring their timely transportation to authorised sites.
The Delhi government will facilitate coordination among the departments and agencies concerned, while the MCD will be responsible for implementation and monitoring at the local level.
Mayor Pravesh Wahi said the collection centres would help ensure proper management of religious materials and prevent them from being scattered across public spaces.
He said the civic body would focus on maintaining the kiosks, ensuring regular collection and transportation of deposited materials, and keeping the facilities accessible and functional. Wahi also appealed to residents to use the designated centres and participate in efforts to maintain cleanliness across the capital.
Plastindia Foundation Chairman Alok Tibrewala said the foundation had developed, supplied and installed the kiosks at designated locations without charging for them.
He said the initiative reflected its commitment to environmental protection and responsible waste management. The programme was attended by Standing Committee chairperson Satya Sharma, Leader of the House Jaibhagwan Yadav, Municipal Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar and officials from the departments concerned.
