Healthy, dignified life for seniors collective responsibility: Vijender Gupta

New Delhi, Oct 6 (UNI) Delhi Legislative Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta on Tuesday called for greater societal and civil-society participation in ensuring the health, dignity and social inclusion of senior citizens, saying a healthy and dignified life for the elderly was a collective responsibility.
“A healthy and dignified life for senior citizens is a collective responsibility of society,” Gupta said while inaugurating a cancer screening camp and Senior Citizens Cultural Festival organised by Sampoorna Sanstha at Aggarwal Dharamshala in Prashant Vihar here.
“Senior citizens are the invaluable foundation of our society, and ensuring their health, dignity and happiness is our collective responsibility. Initiatives that combine healthcare with respect and social participation give a meaningful message of caring for our elders,” he said.
The Speaker stressed the importance of preventive healthcare and timely screening, particularly for senior citizens, and appreciated Sampoorna Sanstha for organising the cancer screening camp and providing elderly residents access to healthcare services alongside a community programme focused on their wellbeing.
Gupta said senior citizens needed more than healthcare, stressing the importance of respect, companionship and meaningful participation in social life.
He said their experience, wisdom and contribution to families and society represented an invaluable legacy for younger generations and that efforts should be made to ensure that elderly people continued to feel connected, respected and valued.
The cultural festival featured a speech competition and a session on the rights and dignity of senior citizens, providing elderly participants an opportunity to express themselves and showcase their talents.
A special Dada-Dadi and grandchildren dance competition was also organised, highlighting the emotional bond between generations.
Gupta said such activities could strengthen family relationships and help inculcate among children a sense of respect and affection for their grandparents.
He commended Sampoorna Sanstha for organising the programme under its vision of a “Healthy Senior, Prosperous Society” and bringing healthcare, cultural expression and social interaction together on a common platform.
The Speaker also called for greater participation by civil society organisations in initiatives aimed at promoting the health, dignity and active social engagement of senior citizens.UNI PWS AAB
