Delhi to modernise Food Safety Department, increase staff strength to intensify anti-adulteration drive

New Delhi, Oct 29 (UNI) The Delhi government will modernise the Food Safety Department and increase its staff strength to strengthen inspections and enforcement against food adulteration, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Thursday, asserting that the crackdown would continue throughout the year and not be confined to the festive season.
The announcement came as food safety teams seized 948.9 litres of ghee during raids at three locations across the Capital on Wednesday. The operations were conducted at Bhogal Market in southeast Delhi, Najafgarh Market in southwest Delhi and Shiv Vihar in northeast Delhi as part of the government's ongoing campaign to prevent the sale of adulterated and substandard food products during the festive season.
Gupta said the department's inspection mechanism was being equipped with modern technology to expedite sample testing and ensure prompt action against violations. The government is also working to augment the department's manpower, with personnel from other departments likely to be deployed, if required, to expand surveillance and enforcement across Delhi.
During the raids, officials seized 389.9 litres of ghee from Bhogal Market and 338 litres from Najafgarh Market. In a joint operation with the Delhi Police at Shiv Vihar, another 221 litres of ghee was confiscated, taking the total seizure to 948.9 litres.
Food safety teams also collected 15 ghee samples from Bhogal and Najafgarh markets. The samples have been sent to a laboratory for examination in accordance with prescribed food safety standards, officials said.
Further action will be initiated based on the laboratory findings, the department said, adding that inspections and enforcement measures were being carried out to protect consumers from adulterated, unsafe and substandard food items.
The Chief Minister directed the department to maintain strict vigilance and ensure that there was no laxity in the campaign. She said action would be taken against all those found involved in food adulteration, including branded companies, and stressed that accountability would remain central to the enforcement drive.
An intensive public awareness campaign is also set to be launched to sensitise consumers about food safety and encourage them to report suspected violations.
Gupta said the government's action against adulteration would continue throughout the year rather than being limited to festivals, when demand for food products rises and the risk of unsafe goods entering the market becomes a particular concern.
Describing food purity as an issue directly linked to public health, consumer confidence and safety, she said the government's responsibility was to ensure that people could purchase food products without fearing that their quality or safety had been compromised.
The government's approach, she said, was not limited to detecting individual cases of adulteration but aimed at establishing a stronger system through regular monitoring, modern testing facilities, adequate manpower and swift action against those responsible.
The Chief Minister urged residents to report suspected food adulteration, poor-quality products and the sale of expired food items to the Food Safety Department.
