Human judgment, not AI alone, will decide business winners, IIM Sambalpur conclave hears

New Delhi, Oct 28 (UNI) Artificial intelligence may give businesses access to similar tools and greater computing power, but human judgment, creativity, empathy and adaptability will determine their success, business leaders and experts said at the annual Marmagya 11.0 conclave of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Sambalpur’s Delhi Centre.
Held at the institute’s Delhi Centre in Vasant Kunj on the theme “The Human Advantage in an AI Age”, the conclave brought together industry leaders, policymakers, academics and students to discuss responsible AI adoption, workforce reskilling and the translation of technology into measurable business outcomes.
IIM Sambalpur founding director Professor Mahadeo Jaiswal said AI would disrupt industries, governance and education, but would enhance rather than destroy existing systems. With information becoming readily accessible, education must increasingly focus on critical thinking, creativity and innovation, he said, adding that India’s young population offered a significant advantage if the human potential of AI was harnessed effectively.
Chief guest Ambassador Raj Kumar Srivastava, dean of the Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service, emphasised ethical leadership, self-awareness and purpose. “If you answer it correctly, AI will become a tool in your hands. If you don’t, AI will overpower you,” he said, urging future leaders to embrace truthfulness, service, equanimity and a clear sense of purpose.
Kushnava Laha, head of services strategy for cloud software and services at Ericsson, said professionals must learn to frame problems accurately, assess AI-generated outputs and understand their limitations. “You cannot tell your company that AI did it,” he said, stressing that accountability for decisions remained with humans.
HR leader Dimple Kaloya advocated combining deep professional expertise with broader technological and leadership skills. She described AI as a friend rather than a threat, emphasising the importance of curiosity, empathy and innovation.
Amit Gupta, practice head of the Global AI Consulting Group at Mastercard, called for extending AI’s benefits beyond urban centres to rural India. He cautioned that buying AI tools did not automatically deliver productivity gains and urged companies to demonstrate measurable results. “Embrace these tools, but verifying what you produce is on your shoulders. Human judgment is always the super layer,” he said.
Two leadership dialogues examined workforce transformation, employee trust, reskilling and the use of AI to reach underserved markets. Panellists stressed that transparent communication and employee engagement were essential to successful technological change, recalling instances where inadequate consultation had delayed automation projects.
The discussions concluded that AI-driven competitiveness would depend not merely on acquiring technology but on developing skills, maintaining trust and translating machine-generated insights into sound decisions. Marmagya is IIM Sambalpur’s annual business conclave, bringing together corporate leaders, policymakers, entrepreneurs, academics and students to discuss emerging business challenges and opportunities.
