Indian Army debunks Chinese intrusion claims, deepfake video on Arunachal Pradesh

Parwinder Sandhu
New Delhi, Oct 26 (UNI) The Indian Army has exposed two instances of online disinformation involving fabricated claims of Chinese incursions into Indian territory, including a misleading video of commercial vehicles at the Nathu La border trade point in Sikkim and a digitally manipulated clip falsely attributing remarks about Chinese control over parts of Arunachal Pradesh to a senior Army officer.
In separate fact-checks posted on social media, the Indian Army Fact Check account flagged the circulation of misleading content aimed at portraying authorised commercial activity along the India-China border as an intrusion and presenting fabricated statements as an alleged admission by a senior military official.
In the first instance, the Army said social media accounts were circulating a video showing Chinese vehicles near the India-China border, accompanied by claims that the vehicles had entered Indian territory without authorisation. The posts also alleged that mainstream Indian media was deliberately concealing the incident.
Clarifying the origin of the footage, the Army said it showed JAC-branded Chinese commercial vehicles at Nathu La Pass in Sikkim, a designated India-China border trade point.
The movement of commercial vehicles along an authorised trade route was being misrepresented as evidence of a Chinese military intrusion, it said, adding that trade at Nathu La operates under established bilateral agreements, designated trading facilities and regulated procedures.
In a separate fact-check titled “Detect the Deepfake”, the Army warned against a digitally altered video containing fabricated remarks attributed to Lt Gen Girish Kalia. The manipulated clip claimed that China had taken control of Asaphila, Longju and Taksing Circle in Arunachal Pradesh and that the Indian Army had been denied essential supplies.
The Army said the video used Synthetic Generated Information (SGI) to falsely attribute the remarks to the officer and portray them as a leaked admission by a senior military commander.
Tracing the footage to its original source, the Army said it related to a press briefing delivered by then General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 28 Infantry Division, Maj Gen Girish Kalia, in Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir, on October 27, 2023.
During the briefing, the officer spoke about infiltration attempts across the Line of Control (LoC) and the security situation in Kashmir. He reported that security forces had foiled 10 infiltration attempts in the division's area of responsibility over the preceding eight months, resulting in the elimination of 27 terrorists and the recovery of a large quantity of warlike stores. He had also referred to the recovery of narcotics.
The original statement did not refer to Chinese control over any territory in Arunachal Pradesh or the alleged denial of essential supplies to the Indian Army, the fact-check clarified.
The original briefing had instead highlighted the efforts of security forces to counter infiltration and maintain peace in the Kashmir Valley, along with the coordination among security agencies.
The Army cautioned social media users against amplifying manipulated videos and urged them to verify the source and context of statements before sharing them.
