India-US joint military exercise Yudh Abhyas 2026 begins at Auli, Mahajan; drones, autonomous systems in focus

New Delhi, Sep 15 (UNI) The 22nd edition of the India-US Joint Military Exercise Yudh Abhyas commenced on Tuesday with the opening ceremony at the Auli Foreign Training Node in Uttarakhand, with 600 personnel from each side participating in the exercise being simultaneously conducted at Auli and the Mahajan Field Firing Range in Rajasthan.
The exercise, which brings together the Indian and US armies, is aimed at enhancing their joint military capabilities for the employment of Integrated Battle Groups in mountainous and semi-mountainous terrain, with a particular emphasis on infantry-dominated operations.
Major General Amaresh Gunjan, General Officer Commanding, 14 Infantry Division, and Colonel Benjamin Jackman, Commander, 1st Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 11th Airborne Division, US Army, addressed the participating contingents at the opening ceremony.
The exercise is designed to enhance interoperability between the two forces and facilitate the exchange of best operational practices, besides strengthening their capabilities for joint planning and execution of military operations across varied terrain and operational environments.
A key focus of this year's exercise will be the infusion of technology into military operations, with troops expected to train on the employment of drones and autonomous systems for surveillance and reconnaissance.
The Mahajan Field Firing Range will also host demonstrations of contemporary weapon systems, while Subject Matter Experts from the Indian and US armies will exchange views on emerging technologies and developments in multi-domain warfare.
The exercise will provide the two armies an opportunity to share tactics, techniques and procedures and hone their ability to undertake coordinated operations in diverse operational environments.
The simultaneous conduct of the exercise in the mountainous terrain of Auli and the desert environment of Mahajan is expected to provide the participating troops exposure to distinctly different operational conditions, while further strengthening their interoperability and ability to operate together.
