INS Sahyadri reaches Japan to participate in multilateral naval exercise Malabar 2026

New Delhi, Nov 5 (UNI) Strengthening India's maritime engagement with key Indo-Pacific partners, the Indian Navy's indigenous stealth frigate INS Sahyadri arrived at Yokosuka Naval Base in Japan on November 4 to participate in the multilateral naval exercise Malabar 2026, bringing together the navies of India, Japan, the United States and Australia.
The arrival of the Guided Missile Stealth Frigate, which is part of the Eastern Fleet, marks another significant engagement in the growing maritime cooperation between India and Japan and reflects the Indian Navy's commitment to strengthening operational partnerships with like-minded countries in the Indo-Pacific region.
INS Sahyadri received a warm welcome from the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) at Yokosuka. The welcome ceremony was attended by Vice Admiral Yagi Koji, Commandant of Yokosuka District, and R Madhu Sudan, Deputy Chief of the Indian Mission in Japan.
Malabar 2026 provides a platform for the participating navies to enhance operational coordination, improve interoperability and exchange professional expertise through a series of engagements in harbour and at sea.
The harbour phase of the exercise will feature professional interactions, discussions and coordinated operational planning among the participating forces. This will be followed by the sea phase, during which INS Sahyadri will operate alongside naval units from Japan, the United States and Australia.
The maritime engagements are aimed at enhancing coordination between the four navies, strengthening mutual understanding and building capabilities to respond collectively to evolving maritime security challenges.
The exercise assumes significance against the backdrop of the changing security environment in the Indo-Pacific, where cooperation among regional and extra-regional maritime forces remains central to ensuring freedom of navigation, maritime stability and a rules-based regional order.
INS Sahyadri's participation also underscores India's commitment to advancing its maritime partnerships under the vision of MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions), which seeks to deepen cooperation and promote security and growth across the wider maritime neighbourhood.
