IIM Sambalpur, France’s IAE Bordeaux join hands to train 50 global business leaders as research scholars

New Delhi, Nov 4 (UNI) The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Sambalpur, in partnership with France’s IAE Bordeaux University School of Management, has brought together 50 senior business and government professionals from six countries under an international Executive PhD–Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) dual-degree programme, seeking to strengthen global collaboration in management research and executive education.
The three cohorts comprise senior professionals from India, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates, representing a wide spectrum of leadership positions, including chairpersons, managing directors, chief executive officers, company founders, senior government officials and defence professionals.
Described by IIM Sambalpur as India's pioneering dual-degree doctoral initiative for working professionals, the programme offers successful candidates an Executive PhD from IIM Sambalpur and a DBA from IAE Bordeaux. It has been structured to enable experienced executives to undertake advanced academic research while continuing with their professional responsibilities.
The initiative seeks to bring management theory closer to industry practice by encouraging senior professionals to transform real-world organisational challenges and their leadership experiences into rigorous, evidence-based research with academic and practical relevance.
"Our Executive PhD and DBA scholars bring real organisational problems into the research room, and they take evidence-based answers back to their boardrooms," said IIM Sambalpur Director Professor Mahadeo Jaiswal.
"Partnering with IAE Bordeaux allows us to offer rigorous, world-class training in research methods that meet global standards, while keeping the programme deeply relevant to the challenges Indian and global businesses face today," he added.
The three cohorts reflect the programme's growing international reach and multidisciplinary character. The latest cohort consists of 14 senior executives, including executive directors, chairpersons, directors, vice-presidents, founders and CEOs from the technology, automotive, consulting, renewable energy and engineering sectors.
The second cohort comprises 20 professionals with backgrounds in technology, finance, defence, energy and healthcare. The founding cohort has 16 scholars associated with prominent organisations, including the Adani Group, NTT DATA, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, Korn Ferry, Google and Lava International. Its participants include managing directors, vice-presidents, CEOs, joint presidents, directors, entrepreneurs and senior government officials.
The academic immersion brought together international faculty members and management experts for discussions on contemporary business challenges, emerging global trends, leadership and the increasingly important role of research in organisational decision-making.
The programme featured a keynote address by Dr Rajiv Kohli, John N. Dalton Memorial Professor of Business at the Raymond A. Mason School of Business, William & Mary, United States. Dr Jorge Cardoso, Programme Director of the International DBA Cohort at IAE Bordeaux, also outlined the academic framework and international significance of the collaboration.
The initiative comes at a time when businesses worldwide are grappling with profound changes driven by artificial intelligence, the global energy transition, geopolitical realignments and the rapid expansion of digital infrastructure. These developments have increased the demand for leaders capable of combining professional expertise with systematic research, critical analysis and evidence-based decision-making.
Unlike conventional doctoral programmes largely pursued by full-time researchers, the Executive PhD–DBA model allows working professionals to examine institutional and business challenges encountered in their careers, subject their findings to rigorous academic scrutiny and produce research that contributes both to management scholarship and organisational performance.
IIM Sambalpur expects the programme's international composition to encourage cross-border academic partnerships, expand professional networks and nurture a new generation of research-oriented business leaders. The broader ambition is to strengthen management thought, promote organisational innovation and advance evidence-based business practices in India and across the global corporate landscape.
