Verma assures Delhiites of road quality road, warns those damaging newly built roads to face FIRs

Agraj Pratap Singh
New Delhi, Oct 7 (UNI) Delhi PWD Minister Parvesh Verma on Wednesday assured Delhi residents that there would be no compromise on the quality of newly constructed roads, while warning that those found deliberately damaging or digging up fresh road stretches would face FIRs.
Verma said the department has already brought alleged incidents of deliberate damage to newly built roads to the police’s attention, and action would be taken after verification.
“People need not worry about the quality of the roads being constructed. The roads will be built as per prescribed quality standards,” the minister said.
He informed that the government has come up with a system that would be in place involving several measures to ensure accountability in road construction, including third-party audits to monitor the quality of work and check compliance with prescribed standards.
Under the new system, the contractor responsible for constructing a road will also be accountable for its maintenance for five years. The contractor will not be allowed to evade responsibility and will have to ensure the proper upkeep of the road during this period, Verma said.
The minister was responding to reports of people making videos and reels showing themselves digging up or damaging portions of newly constructed roads and then posting the footage on social media, often alleging poor construction quality.
Verma said such cases have been reported to the police by the concerned department, and appropriate action would follow after verification.
Recently, videos have surfaced on social media showing individuals digging up portions and corners of newly constructed roads, claiming that the roads were of poor quality.
The minister, however, said there is a prescribed process for road construction and handover. Once a road stretch is completed, it is properly inspected and checked before being formally handed over by the contractor to the department.
He said the inspection and handover process ensures that the quality of the work is assessed before the road is opened for public use.
