NHRC takes suo motu cognizance of media reports in case related to rape of minor

New Delhi, June 2 (UNI) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that a nine-year-old girl victim of rape and brutal physical assault died at the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) on June 1 amid allegations that she was left waiting in an ambulance for several hours before getting a bed to start her treatment.
The Commission issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, Bihar, calling for a detailed report in the matter within two weeks.
The minor girl was victimised in Muzaffarpur district of the state on May 26 and was brought to the hospital in a critical condition on May 30.
The Commission, after examining the contents of the news report, said it raised a serious issue of violation of
human rights.
According to the media report on June one, the same perpetrator had earlier committed the same offence with another 12 year-old-girl and had attempted to kill her.
In another case NHRC took suo motu cognizance of a media report that the residents are opposing the proposed construction of a dam, apprehending that it may result in the displacement of several people and adversely impact livelihood and ecology in the Siang district, Arunachal Pradesh.
The Commission issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, Arunachal Pradesh, calling for a detailed report in the matter within two weeks.
The Commission observed that the news report raises issues of violation of human rights.
According to the media report on May 23 a Human Rights activist and Convenor of the Siang Indigenous Farmers Forum led a protest against the dam construction in Beging village in which approximately 400 people participated. UNI RB SSP
