PM Modi hails Asian Games contingent, says India is moving towards sporting powerhouse status

New Delhi, Oct 15 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday congratulated members of the Indian contingent that competed at the 2026 Asian Games, praising their achievements and expressing confidence that the country was steadily moving towards becoming a global sporting powerhouse.
Interacting with the athletes at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi, Modi said their performances had brought honour to the country. “Our Asian Games champions have made the Tricolour fly high! Their achievements show what passion, perseverance and belief can achieve,” he said, adding, “You have made the Tricolour fly high and enhanced its honour and pride.”
Reaffirming his confidence in India's sporting ambitions, the Prime Minister said, “We will do it,” underlining the country's determination to strengthen its standing in international sport.
India finished fourth in the medal standings at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, winning 85 medals, including 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze. The result marked India's second consecutive finish among the top five nations at the continental sporting event and reflected the country's growing competitiveness across multiple disciplines.
The contingent recorded several notable milestones, including historic performances in recurve archery and gold medals for both the men's and women's hockey teams. India also won its maiden Asian Games medals in soft tennis and mixed martial arts, marking significant breakthroughs in disciplines that have traditionally received relatively limited attention in the country.
Shooting delivered another landmark achievement, with India claiming its first-ever gold medal in the women's trap event. In weightlifting, the country won an Asian Games silver medal after a gap of 28 years, while wrestling witnessed a major breakthrough as an Indian wrestler reached the Greco-Roman final for the first time in 64 years.
The achievements highlighted the expanding range of India's sporting capabilities and the emergence of athletes capable of challenging established competitors across different disciplines.
The interaction was attended by members of the Indian contingent, their coaches and support staff, officials of the Indian Olympic Association, representatives of National Sports Federations and officials of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The gathering recognised not only the athletes' performances but also the contribution of coaches and support personnel involved in preparing them for major international competitions.
India's performance in Japan has added momentum to its ambition of establishing itself among the world's leading sporting nations.
Sustaining the progress will require continued investment in grassroots talent identification, coaching, sports science, training infrastructure and international exposure. The challenge will be to build on the achievements at the Asian Games and translate individual breakthroughs into consistent results across disciplines at future international competitions.
With the Olympic Games and other major sporting events providing further tests of India's competitiveness, Modi's interaction with the contingent underscored the emphasis on recognising sporting excellence and encouraging athletes to aim higher on the international stage. UNI SKA AAB
