Malhotra defends BJP’s ‘Save Democracy’ padyatra, accuses Congress and AAP of hypocrisy

New Delhi, Oct 27 (UNI) Delhi BJP president Harsh Malhotra on Tuesday defended the party’s proposed “Save Democracy – Remove Anarchy Padyatra” amid opposition from the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), accusing them of double standards over protests and road blockades in the national capital.
“Those who have held Delhi’s businesses and the general public hostage by blocking the city’s roads for weeks, at times in the name of students and at times in the name of removing the Election Commissioner, are today opposing a symbolic two-hour padyatra. This is not opposition; it is hypocrisy,” Malhotra said in a statement.
Drawing a distinction between the BJP’s proposed march and protests by opposition parties, he said the BJP’s programme would be peaceful, disciplined and conducted within the constitutional framework.
“They resort to anti-national slogans, violence, stone-pelting and damage to public property. Our identity is a peaceful and disciplined padyatra within the framework of the Constitution. We will not throw stones; we will shower flowers in honour of democracy,” he said.
Malhotra alleged that opposition protests had created an atmosphere of disruption in Delhi, affecting businesses, traffic movement and the general public. He said the BJP’s objective, in contrast, was to “remove anarchy, save democracy, and raise the voice of the people”.
Addressing concerns over the impact of the proposed march on commercial activity, particularly in Chandni Chowk, the BJP leader said the party’s Yuva Morcha and Trade Cell workers would ensure that business operations continued normally.
“Our programme is symbolic and will conclude peacefully within two hours,” he said.
Malhotra maintained that while dissent was an essential part of democracy, protests should not cause disruption or inconvenience to the public.
“In a democracy, everyone has the right to dissent, but no one has the right to create anarchy. The BJP has always stood for dialogue, peace, and democratic propriety,” he said.
