Cong blames Nitish Govt for rise in crimes against women, demands accountability

New Delhi, June 2 (UNI) The Congress on Monday accused the NDA-led Bihar government for rise in crimes against women and demanded immediate accountability from the Nitish Kumar administration.

“Within just 15 days, numerous girls in Bihar have been subjected to horrific atrocities,” alleged All India Mahila Congress president Alka Lamba said while addressing a press conference alongside Uttarakhand Congress spokesperson Garima Mehra Dasauni.

Lamba outlined a series of cases to highlight the deteriorating law and order situation in Bihar. “In Muzaffarpur, a class 5 girl was raped and murdered. In Chhapra, a student was abducted while returning from school, then gang-raped and killed. A minor was gang-raped in Sitamarhi, a two-and-a-half-year-old girl was raped in West Champaran, and two more minors were raped in Munger and Araria,” she stated.

Accusing Chief Minister Nitish Kumar of presiding over a period of "poor governance," Lamba said the responsibility for the situation squarely lies with him. “We demand that the Bihar government ensure accountability in these issues,” she added.

Raising the issue of Prajwal Revanna, accused of sexually assaulting women in Karnataka, Lamba claimed "had the Congress party not been in power in the state, Revanna would still be roaming free - the same person for whom Prime Minister Narendra Modi campaigned".

Lamba also alleged that both the National Women's Commission and the State Women's Commission have become mere puppets of the BJP. She also slammed the governmentfor failing to deliver on promises regarding One Stop Centres, claiming they are "nowhere to be found either in the country or in Bihar".

Meanwhile, Garima Mehra Dasauni targeted the BJP in Uttarakhand, accusing the party of misusing the Ankita Bhandari murder case for political gain. “The BJP is so desperate for publicity that even before the verdict was out, it released a poster giving all credit to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami,” Dasauni said.

"This BJP poster is filled with lies. It claims that the accused in the Ankita Bhandari case were jailed within 24 hours, which is completely false," Dasauni alleged.

She also claimed that Uttarakhand has witnessed a rise in cases of crime against women in the last six months.

“Given the current situation, we need to save our daughters from the BJP. The involvement of BJP leaders is evident in several such cases in Uttarakhand,” she alleged.
